"Do you know when you'll be speaking to Haim?" a text arrives. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: The sender also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile supporters have also coveted the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path doing sets at small eateries with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos repeatedly depict them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless happiness you can't help but think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the biggest honour. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to start a band."

"So everyone gets an invitation to be the fourth part of the family."

Grammy Milestone

The trio have called into home, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge milestone," adds Alana. "But we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The album came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that strange in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words follow breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to actively work on blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed confidence demanded a fresh approach – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global audience.

Yet the sister act will always be their primary focus.

"We have been performing since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
