Learning centers in the northern part of Nigeria have often been targeted for weapon-wielding factions

Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.

The criminal group breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on Monday, police confirmed.

The assailants "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their living quarters, an official report indicated.

An educational worker was lost their life while safeguarding the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.

Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.

Local residents informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into adjacent wilderness.

The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.

In the past few years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have increasingly been targeted for armed groups, who frequently execute kidnappings to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they wait and hope for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Safety emergency in northern Nigeria has intensified significantly in the past few months, with educational institutions bearing the brunt of the unrest.
